Tom Wolfe

I had sort of written off this guy after reading his last book, A Man in Full. Too old, is what I thought. He's trying to writes stories about young folks, he doesn't really get. It looks like he's up to it again, criticizing the sexuality or un-sexuality of American culture. I like this article.

I, life Wolfe, am not into religious restrictions on sex. However, I also find something disgustingly un-erotic with the mass consumption of sex. It's as if white-trash pornography has become the practicum of the mainstream. Don't get me wrong - I look at porno and like PBR. I sympathize with the "reactionary" red-states who hate the idea of elite liberals telling them what's right and wrong to think. I find elite liberals to be pretentious and out of touch - the type of people who are elite simply because they cannot interact with normal folks. The type of people who would be crushed on the sporting field, scared in a fight, and unable to relate to average jo values. But having grown up in a liberal west coast enclave, I may share some of these qualities, but I don't like them. I hate the idea of isolating myself to a stratum of society. At the same time, I hate, no check that, despise the ghetto. I'm a snoot and think people should live well, but not decadant.

But back to the sex...I know what he's talking about, this un-erotic thing going on, I've experienced it and observe it. It's having sex and partners to build a resume or resolve boredom. There can be more, I know it. A single, religious partner, one marriage and celibacy aren't the answers, but there is something else to be discovered. Maybe some already have.
