I was supposed to read PETERSBURG for my Russian Lit class in 2001 but various other parts of my life got in the way. I brought it with me to NY after graduation, didn't manage to read it, so I also brought it with me to LA in 2004. Finally about this time last year I started on it again. I made it halfway through and then stopped, because it is not the sort of book one can get through by reading in spurts while sitting in cafes on lunch breaks, which is how I was attempting to read it. However, there were still a number of turns-of-phrase even in just the first half that really tickled me. Like: "Let us investigate his soul. But first, let us investigate that restaurant." I know it's in translation, but it seems to perfectly capture a train of thought that I often find myself riding. Maybe eventually I'll read the second half.
