If you are then I am too. Wall.e: cute but the most cynical movie I've seen in a very long time. Dark Knight: great crash/action scenes but only the most tentative forays into actual, non-cartoon humanity. Kids these days.
Let's not forget that the third goddamn Lord of the Rings movie swept -- SWEPT! -- the Oscars back in 2004. Unfortunately, this trend is neither recent nor on the verge of regressing...
Yeah, but the Lord of the Rings movies have strong and well developed humanity in them. Sure there is some stuff that is a little schmaltzy, but on the whole the character stories are Shakespeare instead of Marvel.

dark knight has great elements, but the whole is less than the sum.
is it too much to expect to see human faces in good dramas? i know i'm just being grumpy and there are counterexamples...
