Why Aren't Rising Gas Prices Being Celebrated?

I don't understand. EVERYONE I know - conservative, liberal, whomever, agrees that we ought to ween ourselves off of oil. Rising gas prices are the ONLY way to actually get changes to our oil dependent-infrastructure to stick. Sure, Hollywood celebs and a few people will get hybrids and biodiesol fuel on their own, but let's be honest, these efforts are nominal and symbolic at best.

So instead of bitching about gas prices, people should be jumping up and down celebrating. I'm rethinking driving to NoCal this summer, and have extra incentive to carpool, take the bus, or not leave the neighborhood, if possible.

These are good things for the world, environment, and probably even for myself.

Can I get one politician to not be a pussy and say this?

Your statement is exactly right!

However, when the economy of the US is still driven and dependent on fossil fuels, most politicians are going to complain.

Are peopel driving less these past few months? That's my question.

bullshit, out of touch elitist. first off, i'm a frigging student in LOS ANGELES the driving capital of the US, i probably feel the pain more than most. many critics of bush say he didn't ask the nation to sacrifice anything after 9/11. well, here's a sacrifice we ought to do together. there's nothing elite about it. of course, we feel the pain of the extra cost of gas. just like it's hard to quit smoking. or to cut down on fast food. anyone who thinks cutting down on oil consumption is elitist - well, first they're wrong, and second, they can shove it and got vote for the truth spinning other guy who'll get them more pork, if that's the type of world they want to live in.

the race riot metaphor hardly works. we're talking about violence on the one hand and addiction/consumption on the other.
