Maybe Kevin Drum Is Right

Maybe if we just don't think about, or just don't talk about it, it will all go away, or at least not get worse.

Wishful thinking.

Iran is building nukes, and will have the option of giving them to Hezbollah, which will have the power to detonate them in Israel.

And so we will live in a world where nutjobs posing as governments have access to nuclear bombs. Maybe the Iranians aren't that stupid. Maybe they aren't willing to allow their country and civilization to be wiped off the face of the planet. Maybe.

You mischaracterize Drum's post. If you read his blog Drum does talk a lot about what to do about Iran. What he specifically neglects is castigation of the evil nature of the Iranian regime- it's oppression of free speech, gays, etc. This he avoids because he doesn't want to fuel the moralistic paradigm through which we ought to view Iran.

If anything he could make the case that since the Bush administration and hawkish conservatives do such a good job of branding Iran as evil, he and liberals like him are doing a service by shoring up the "back here in reality" aspect of our strategy with Iran, which isn't clouded by moral sentiments.

Again, Drum isn't saying we ignore the Iran issue. Just that we not pull a Tom Friedman and let Bush use us as cover for an inept military invasion.
