Respect or Capitulation?

You tell me.

Three words: Nixon to China.

Just like Nixon exposed the fractures in what had been assumed to be a stable China-USSR relationship, the US should be doing the same for the Syria-Iran relationship. Those countries are not natural allies, unless we keep making them so.

When did you turn into Rush Limbaugh? :) You know the saying, when in Rome, do as Romans...

Actually, do explain your problem with the headscarf. I mean, I wore a yarmulke when I went into a synagogue even though I'm not Jewish, cause that's what guys do. Laura Bush and Condi Rice have worn a headscarf when appropriate in Muslim countries. It's called manners.

Moreover, Republican members of Congress have been and are going to Syria. The Baker-Hamilton commision went to Syria. What is your problem with Pelosi going?

so you view it as a sign of respect. fair enough.

and truth be told, i don't have a problem with the headscarf in the same way i have a problem with the veil.

BUT, there are several issues - 1. Is Pelosi performing a religious act or political act when this picture was taken. If she was going into mosque - no problem. If she was acting as a female member of the HOR in a political setting, it's a bit different.

2. But also - with respect to Islam, why do women wear the headscarf and sometimes the veil when men don't? Do women need to be more submissive to God than men? More humble? Let's face facts - Islam clashes with feminism, there are a host of double standards and outright human rights violations perpetrated against women (as a group) within the bounds of Islam. The headscarf is the least of these double standards - genital mutilation and death by stoning, the greatest.

Sure, Rosa Parks could have good manners and just go to the back of the bus. She could also display courage and sit up front. Likewise, Pelosi could wear the headscarf like a polite speaker of the house, or like Orianna Falluci did when face to face with Ayatollah Kohmeni scrunch it up and toss "that rag," as she called it, to the ground.

but she's a politician, so i guess i shouldn't expect anything more (or less, actually )
