Just A Thought

Proponents of universal healthcare are fond of saying - the United States is the richest country in the world, therefore we ought to be able to provide healthcare to all our citizens. If this is true, couldn't you equally say: if the United States is the richest country in the world, shouldn't we balance our budget? If we're so rich, why are we living in debt? And if we're living in debt, why are would we expand programs such as healthcare that don't have any obvious "growth" potential. I can see going into debt because it will lead to greater wealth down the road. Isn't the whole problem with healthcare the skyrocketing costs which are going to bankrupt us down the road? And we're talking about expanding coverage?
