He Could Be Pres.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1007/6121_Page4.html

A pretty moving speech from Obama. He's right about the war - Senators who voted in 2002 for the war knew what they were voting for. This was never just Bush's war, although many try to cynically make it Bush's mistake. Clinton's retreat since that time, he says, was like giving the President a blank check and then acting surprised that he cashed it. It's just too bad I don't agree with the guy, otherwise I'd vote for him.

What is it you don't agree with him about? I must admit that I disagree with the inclination to immediately pull our of Iraq - but, even so - Obama looks pretty good to me.

More than anybody he seems to be somebody who thinks for himself. I have great respect for any senator who voted against the war, as the popular and easy thing to do was to get with the majority and vote for it.

i think it should be obvious, but i don't think he's right about pulling out of Iraq. i also don't like his "the whole thing was a mistake" position. but beyond that, i don't know if he gets the big picture right on the WOT. and for all of bush's follies, i think he does. and i think it is the biggest issue facing our country today. is that enough?

as for thinking for himself - i don't think that separates him from any candidate. as far as i can tell, they all think for themselves. all the dems criticize bush for thinking TOO MUCH for himself.

why does voting against the war earn "respect?" who gives a shit if you vote the popular or unpopular way. what matters is whether you take the right position. there were senators who voted against gulf war 1. do they deserve "respect" because they took an unpopular position? i don't like the way that word is used today. "respect." it means nothing. it is what all the islamicist crybabies say they want, "respect."

but all that being said, there is another issue...is barak electable? the fact is, his core constituency is upper middle class blue state liberals. that's where his 20% of dem support comes from. granted, i am one of those people, but whatever. i think he would probably be a good pres and would make us all feel good and progressive and happy, but the world will still be a difficult and dangerous place.
