Book: Case Histories by Kate Atkinson

Some laugh out loud paragraphs about characters. For that, I read the book. Some folks call this a literary mystery novel. Is that code for a bad mystery? Because I guessed the main mystery about 1/3 of the way in. She pulls a decent "trick" by layering in a number of mysteries, so in fact, you are thinking to yourself while you get these sparse clues - how will this tie together? It's an interesting technique. The jumping around POVs and time was often off putting. She would occasionally end chapters on what I'd call - pre-climaxes - and withhold information that would inspire future action. So we'd get future actions with a gap in understanding the motivation or knowledge of the characters. Personally, I found this quite annoying. The time jumps backwards and forwards were often pointless and I felt done only as an attempt to create suspense when the narrative itself could not provide tension.

Why people like these books, I imagine, is they capture a certain vibe. Part of a broad category of what I'd call "female honesty" stories which purport to portray what is "really feels like" to be female. I find this code for - girls being shitty and finding complex ways to justify it. I haven't seen Babygirl, but it seems like an entry in this genre as well. My wife described the story and I said, if the genders were reversed, the man would be considered a monster. But when the women does it, it's considered "complex."

In any case, a certain type of female reader (lets just be clear here - liberal) seems to enjoy women who bash on motherhood, how much they hate children - including their own, how men are terrible and often worthy of murder, etc. The bad men in the story are indeed monsters - unexplored, uninteresting, monsters whereas the female monsters are complex, mysterious, and to be empathized with. I imagine this element is what readers enjoy - as a way vicariously to indulge their own "bad sides."

Not that there's anything wrong with it!

But all that said, I never hear anyone talk about the TV show Girls anymore and that was a pioneer in this genre.

10% of me entertained giving these clowns a pass on the fires because the winds were so nuts. Wrong. Both have proved to be absolute clowns in the aftermath. Here, Newsom writes an order banning "greedy developers" from buying distressed properties. What? So he's preventing people from selling land in the aftermath of this tragedy? Also - anyone can simply say no to an offer. This is just pointless. 

Then Bass bans "price gouging" on rentals. What? That's just going to mean less available properties for people to move in.

Econ 101 should be a basic requirement for elected office. I'm sorry, these people are too dumb. 

"Palestinians"

I'm very puzzled by the so-called "pro-Palestinian" position. They seem to be delighted by the ceasefire plan that will get the Israel hostages back and keeps Hamas in tact. How is this a victory for the Palestinians? It just ensures another round will be fought sometime in the near future, the Israelis will justifiably keep the Palestinians from having a state, and thousands more Palestinians will die. They seem to think international goodwill will turn against Israel. Wrong. No one cares. If there is peace, the international community will rightly come to believe that Israel deterred their enemies successfully. If there is more terrorism against Israel, it will justify Israel returning to the battlefield for Round 25. These folks have put themselves into a forever losing position. Psychotic.

100 MPH Winds

The winds were crazy and the worst I've seen since I've lived here. So part of me dips into the headspace of - can we really blame these politicians? But the knowledge that our politicians in California don't serve the people and the infrastructure of the state, but instead this strange new progressive ideology isn't wrong. Many of us warned of exactly this - taking our eyes off the ball - and how DEI is by definition in opposition to institutional competence. Sadly, the results are bearing out our predictions across many fields and situations. I don't know how much more obvious it can be. People are rightly giving her shit about the Africa trip. By no means should the mayor be in town 100% of the time, but she should've at least be aware there were extreme fire conditions in her town AND why does a mayor go to Ghana? It's no single one thing she did wrong, but rather a collective of misplaced priorities that yields this behavior. This is the key thing with liberals and the overarching DEI approach to all stuff - it isn't entirely wrong on any particular issue - but it jumbles up and misprioritizes EVERYTHING under the sun. It creates a state of confusion and an inability to function. Hence, this. And no water coming out of the fire hydrants.

A competent mayor would explain the lack of water and say - look - we store enough water to put modest urban fires - not major forest fires. And at least this would explain the lack of water. But she can't even do that. A really competent mayor would say - we screwed up and should've been storing more water in areas that are vulnerable to major forest fires like Palisades, Hollywood Hills, Brentwood, etc. and I tried to get it done but we prioritized XYZ instead. It was a mistake we won't do again.

Our school emailed everyone offering "mental health" support for the fires. People in LA don't need mental health support. They need simple clear orderly directions about what to do in case fires spread where to evacuate, etc. We also need more firefighters, water supply, and forest management. But clearly we spent the money on "mental health" so they will give us mental health support. Idiots.

More Regarding AIs

Anyone who has ever worked for an organization knows the employees serve the organization, not the other way around. This is why you get so many absurdities in the workplace. The Computer History Museum

In Mountain View. A pretty interesting place, with a section on AI where one can chat with various AIs and even talk to a robot. Kids came along with their cousins. Imagine if Michael Mann directed a musical with a Mrs. Doubtfire plotline but told through the POV of a female Michael Clayton. It makes zero sense. Does it work? Not entirely, if you take these things seriously. But 10-12 great scenes and set pieces. Loved the take. Great setting. Gyllenhaal in top form. A number of terrific scenes, especially towards the beginning of the film. Generally great side casting all around. Billy Magnussen one of my favorite random actors. Connor McGregor was absolutely ridiculous and terrible, but in a way that makes sense for the film. I'm a fan of the way they redid this movie. Kept key elements from the first film, but really went on a riff. Terrible how Amazon treated the film. Really coming around to the view that the streamers are enemies to cinema. They are an inhuman machine meant to devour anything that gets in the way of churning algorithmic profit. Does anyone believe differently? Do the people who work at these places like what they're doing? I imagine all of them are just counting the paychecks until their balances reach a point where they can be set for life.

I just checked rotten tomatoes. 52% audience. How is this possible? You can't tell me Deadpool vs. Wolverine is better than this film. Similar audiences. But Deadpool is 94%. Have people lost their minds?

Film: Reservoir Dogs

The first half of the film is more or less perfect. The way the story unfolds, each new character and situation complicating and building upon the last. The flashback stuff is the least exciting, but understandable and needed given the conceit of the story. Is Tim Roth overacting? I read an interview with Leonard Gardner who commented about the film version of his novel. He discussed Susan Tyrrell, the actress who played Oma overacting or perhaps "playing it too big" for him when he was on set. Huston agreed and Gardner spoke to her about it. She said something along the lines of - that's who I am - I play it big. And ignored his notes. And now, he rewatches the film and understands and loves her performance. How much of life is like this?

Looking at box office receipts to figure out some stuff to study next semester - Horizon Chapter 1 earned 29 mil at the box office and Anora earned 13 mil. One considered a terrible bomb, another an oscar contender and one of the movies of the year. I know you can do per-screen stuff, but something is rotten in Denmark.

So boring. First - why the narrative framing device? Who is that for? Second, the uncanny valley. One becomes super aware of the technology and phoniness of the endeavour by the "realistic" looking animals speaking in English. 3rd, Mufasa is not a super interesting lead character -- too perfect, too good, not-dimensional. Scar the most interesting character, but the arcs and shifts in his character toward the end were unearned. Fourth, music was entirely unmemorable. 5th - I couldn't tell the lions apart. 

Just a flat overall story. Of the 11 people I saw the film with, probably 4 reported enjoying it. None of the emotional charm of the original.

They used to be visual stories you'd go to with friends and family and watch with a community. I'm not sure they function that way anymore. I almost wonder if movies are a now a simply one of many subjects for which people can vent about online. Like they are themselves shorthanded symbols for certain tribal associations and belonging.

Observations

The other day I was at an eye doctor's appointment with my son, we had 30 minutes to kill so we went to a hip nearby LA coffee joint. It was packed with people. But here's the odd thing - the silence. You could hear pin drop. I noticed because I got a hair self conscious speaking with my kid because I could feel everyone able to hear us, if they opted to listen. I'm talking about 15-20 people lingering in this coffee joint, all working on laptops, etc. It was so busy, we couldn't find a place to sit for two.

I can tell you for a fact - 10-15 years ago - coffee shops just like these all around town were noisy. They were still packed with people writing their screenplays, etc, but there was a buzz about. They weren't like libraries. That's what was so odd. It got me thinking how maybe we've transported energy out of the physical world into the digital. In the old days people would chit chat with the folks around them. Not everyone, of course. It's not like there weren't introverts. But surely you would hear people TALKING in a public space. Even I (an introvert) was even chit chatting with the ordering guy. But it seemed like no one else was chit chatting. Well, they probably were - online somehow. Sigh.

I hated it.

One of the reasons Russia partners with China is that when push comes to shove, I think the Russians feel like they can do this to the Chinese. 

A tip from an Asian American. If you want to take this huge guy down - go for the legs and you need speed/momentum. These countries that don't play football are at a disadvantage. 

A lesson from Cooper DeJean taking down Derrick Henry who I suspect is at least 3x as strong as that Russian dude (as strong as that Russian dude appears to be).

So you see, his real objection is that Israel must accept vulnerability to enemy plans. It's so freaking strange. I mean the guy knows this is a small country hated by neighbors - how do you expect them to react? In what other way should Israel "exist"? Should they allow themselves to be a powerless minority in the region? Ask how that has worked for the Kurds. Or the Shia in Iraq. Or the Palestinians! Or any number of minorities within Iran or anywhere else. Absurdities.

Everything About Israel

Beware the critic who makes everything about Israel. He argues in some posts that Israel enabled Assad. In other posts, he argues Israel caused his downfall. He argues Israel causes all the chaos in the Middle East as a colonial power. Yet, silence on Turkey and Russia, who are also colonial powers and the major players in this Syria thing. It's very odd. What is unique about Israel? The Jews will say these arguments are antisemitic. Too easy. I think it's actually he expects Russia and Turkey to flex because they are big, historically powerful countries. Israel is small. And I think somewhere in this is the root of the some folks revulsion at Israel. How dare this little country act out of place. Don't they know they could be crushed like an ant? And Israel dares to say - no. We won't be crushed and we will do whatever it takes not to be crushed.

Could you slice off a little bit of the new Syria for the Palestinians? Build them an airport, roads etc. Get a buffer space between them and the Israelis? Is no one else thinking this? Does it totally miss the point? Yes. But the benefit would be avoiding the back and forth mass murders.

Felt like a great book written in the 1950s but indeed was written in 2004. Reminds me of something I love about American literature - something I can't quite articulate -- but it has to do with God, nature, and individualism.

Film: Anora

While I enjoyed the humanistic portrayal of the characters, the storytelling ended up feeling a tad linear and not entirely satisfying by the end. I thought Baker might get more ambitious in his filmmaking as he progresses, but the film seemed to me too content being indy - if that makes any sense.

Maybe I've become real dull, but I feel an actual Cinderella version would've been better rather than just a Cinderella set up and then a ha-ha nod to it.

Are learning that overextension doesn't just apply to the US. They are subject to the same laws of finance, resources, and geopolitics.

Syria

How to feel about the more successful, moderate Islamicists that successfully rebeling in Syria? I'd argue we ought to be open to them. Our problem with global jihad was they declared war on us and wanted to  attack and kill Westerners. I wouldn't trust or be too excited about these folks coming to power, yet we have to be realistic about our options across the Muslim world. If folks want Islamic governance and they aren't militarily hostile, what problem do we have with them?

Film: The Truman Show

Unbelievably, I'd never seen it. It's not what I'd call my style of film and yet - it's quite remarkable. The absolute best sequence is basically the first act turn when Truman realizes - something isn't right in the world. He starts behaving in a way not prescribed for him - Carey's acting is wonderful. You track on his face this subtle realization about the nature of his life. The music too - patient. It grows. And it's all done in a rather simple, everyday manner but has an epic quality to it. Peter Weir one of the great directors of his time. Camera positioning in this film - brilliant design. And the end - the filmmaker pulls off a moment where man faces God -- totally biblical. I wonder if the Barbie filmmakers used this as a model. Also, it should be paired with the Matrix. What an interesting thing to look back upon - how Hollywood seemed to know something without really knowing - that we were entering this realm of unreality and was grappling with it on a conceptual level.

Although I am a luddite about quite a number of things, I confess Christmas shopping is a whole lot easier with Amazon. I used to come away from the mall wanting to murder people.

I don't think my students read a ton, but in every single one of my classes, they read more than this Stanford student. And they all actually read because I speak with them about it. 

In my basic screenplay class they read at least 4-6 scripts along with watching 4-6 films. In Adaptation, they read 1 play, 1 novel, 1 long form article, 1 graphic novel, and 1 children's book. Along with all the film or tv adaptations.

I read several books a year out loud with my kids cover to cover - and I mean real books. Just finished Treasure Island. Have read Charlotte's Web 2x times. Tom Sawyer. Doing an abridged Moby Dick right now. Did graphic novel versions of The Iliad and The Odyssey. Not even mentioning all the non-fiction. Interesting to think about this. I tend to think there is some extra value in cover-to-cover reading. Especially when becoming "educated." Not about the efficiency but rather the accomplishment - maybe we create some sort of neural pathways when working through an entire work.

Search vs AI

One thing I'll say about google - search was almost immediately useful. With AI, I find it interesting, but perhaps not quite useful yet. Especially because it has enough ability to be plausible, but I still feel like I need to look over it. Sort of like how little kids perform chores - almost easier for you to do it yourself than to oversee them doing it. 

Apologies To My Political Allies

I gotta go the other way on this one after reading the Phd abstract of Olfactory and Politics of Smell PhD - I don't think it even sounds that bad. 

UPDATE: If nothing more, it's increased the vocabulary of thousands of losers by one big word - more success than most PhDs theses.
