Had a young guest who works in politics say the last time she felt true, unadulterated joy was in 2008, when Obama won the Presidential election. 

This sad statement alone is why people need to have kids. Sure, they are expensive, a ton of work, and a pain in the ass a lot - maybe even most - of the time. But parents experience significantly more joy on a daily basis than any Presidential election outcome. Trust me. 18 years is a long, avoidable, joy dry spell.
